Canada just banned foreigners from buying real estate in the country!
It's a drastic measure that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hopes will cool off a smoking hot real estate market.
It's also meant to keep speculators away and help make housing more affordable for Canadian citizens.
For the next two years, residential properties will be mostly off-limits for foreign businesses and people.
There are SOME exceptions, including international students and people with work visas.
Anyone found violating the ban will face a ten-thousand dollar fine and may be forced to sell the property.
There’s been much debate over how effective this ban will be. A similar one put into place in New Zealand hasn’t brought down its housing prices.
Still, there’s no denying SOMETHING needs to be done: the average Canadian home costs more than ELEVEN times the median household income after taxes!
Do you think this approach makes sense?
