Chalk one up for the environment today because a historic treaty on the oceans was just signed
Nearly 200 countries have agreed to a “high seas treaty” with the aim of protecting marine life.
The treaty will create a new UN body to oversee ocean life conservation and establish marine protected areas.
It’ll also set the ground rules for environmental assessments of commercial activities like deep sea mining and fishing.
The agreement followed a THIRTY-SIX hour final session, TWO WEEKS of full on negotiations and nearly TWO DECADES of work!
Do you think this treaty will have an impact, or is it too little, too late?
